Tubes and Wires

by Niels Klein

Dave Lynch Robby der Roboter graces the cover of this debut by German reedman Klein’s Tubes and Wires; such retro-futurism suits the quartet’s jazzrocktronica — bits and bytes of synthy music (“Track,” “Skip”) for flying saucer tape decks. But listeners with a creative jazz bent should strap in for the longer rides. “Snow” is an evocative, multifaceted gem, and the solemn “End” even features acoustic guitar. You might enjoy that down-to-earth touch. After all, you are not a robot. Favorite track: Snow.

about

Niels Klein’s new quartet is not your everyday line-up: with Lars Duppler on e-piano, synthesizer and harmonium, Hanno Busch on guitar and bass, Jonas Burgwinkel on drums and the bandleader on various clarinets, Klein presents forceful rock music but played with the attitude of jazz musicians when it comes to instrumental technique. The Hamburg born saxophonist, clarinettist and composer called his band and his new CD somewhat jokingly Tubes & Wires. Tubes stands for the various clarinets that he plays and Wires represents the many electronic, analogue and digital devices that he connected with cables and that drive his ‘effect clarinets’.
