Im aktuellen Jazz gibt es nur wenige Formationen, die den Spagat zwischen konzeptioneller Feinarbeit und improvisatorischer Entfesselung so souverän hinkriegen wie das “Inner Language Trio” des
Pianisten Christoph Stiefel.
Auf der Basis einer Kompositionstechnik aus dem Mittelalter (Isorhythmik) hat Stiefel eine zeitgemäße Jazz-Variante geschaffen, die auf faszinierende Weise zwischen Groove-Intensität und Klangfarbenmalerei oszilliert. Mit der Neubesetzung seines Trios und der letzten CD „Big Ship“ leitet er einen sanften Kurswechsel ein - die Stoßrichtung lautet: Weniger Vorgaben, mehr Platz für spontanes Interplay; Konzept und Freiheit werden in eine natürlichere Balance gebracht.
Seine Mitmusiker, der Bassist Lukas Traxel und der Schlagzeuger Tobias Backhaus, haben ein ausgeprägtes Faible für subtil-interaktiven Piano-Trio-Jazz, verfolgen aber auch mit Neugierde aktuelle musikalische Strömungen. Die sich daraus ergebenden Optionen sind unlimitiert. Für eine grenzenlose Musik bringen alle drei Musiker die vorbehaltlose Offenheit mit, auch ihre eigenen inneren Grenzen zu verschieben, um diese im gemeinsamen Spiel schließlich komplett aufzulösen. Keiner der drei Protagonisten steht im Dienst der jeweils anderen, jeder ist ein unverzichtbarer Teil des Ganzen und steuert somit auch sein Teil zum Ganzen bei. Bass und Schlagzeug begleiten das Klavier nicht, sondern komplettieren es.
Auf „Embracing“ bringt Christoph Stiefel dem Hörer etwas entgegen, das sich nur von ganz wenigen CDs sagen lässt – das wundervolle Geschenk einer bedingungslosen Musik.
